The base of your house should be at least 6 inches larger all around the base dimensions of your house so you will have room for landscaping (grass, fences, trees, etc).  Before building your Gingerbread House, make sure your base will fit horizontally through the door (if you intend on moving).

The following items work well:

  •   Piece of 1/4" or 3/8" Plywood, wrapped with freezer paper or painted white;

  •   Kitchen Cutting board, wrapped with freezer paper (this works well if you are keeping your house);

  •   Flat piece of Cardboard, wrapped with freezer paper;

  •   1 inch thick Styrofoam.
